Going Potty

In August, for the first time in ages, I treated myself to a holiday. After lots of research I chose to do a pottery course, and it was awesome. We spent a week learning different techniques, mainly focusing on throwing on the wheel. After 4 months I finally got hold of my finished pots, fired and glazed by the teacher, a very experienced potter. Here are a few pics and if you’re interested in taking a course check out Deborah Baynes Pottery School as it was great. Good setting, good food, good people and great fun.

Cosmo Cards go to market

So, it has been ages, but I’ve been moving house, and got some new responsibilities at school, so it has been pretty hectic the past few months. About 6-7 months ago I applied for the “We Make London” Christmas fair, and as my only market this year it was a big thing to work towards. It was the first showing of my new laser cut artworks, which went down a treat, and I actually made some money for once… I’m working on pics at the moment. It was a really fun day, and good to see and talk to other crafters trying to do similar things with their time. Anyway, it was good to start getting the name out there, and people liked both the cards and new work enough to part with their hard earned cash, which is a massive compliment.

2010 is going to be big for Cosmo Cards so keep checking back.

New Work

I’ve been working on some new designs to go alongside the cards, something a bit more arty, and today managed to use the laser cutter to do a first test cut. I wanted to see how far I could push it in terms of complexity and see which papers worked best with the cutter. I think it went pretty well and you can definitely see the potential for the project in the future.

My summer hols start in under a fortnight so will be producing a lot more real soon.

Wedding Invitations

Recently I’ve been pretty busy at my day job so ain’t been up to loads with the cards, but I’ve just confirmed that I’m cutting down to 3 days a week from Sept so I will have a lot more time in the very near future. I cannot wait.

I have just finshed an order for 50 wedding invites. These were new designs that pushed my little cutting machine quite hard. But I was pleased with the result. They’re made from 2 sheets of this Murano paper, it’s really nice, deckled on one side, comes in lots of nice colours. The sheets are hand sown together. They’re about as quality as I think I can make.

Sorry about the rubbish pic, I’ll sort some better ones soon. Working on designs for matching menu and place names.

Cosmo means business cards

For the opening of Cherry Cherry I wanted to get some business cards together, they were a development of a previous design and used this new Murano paper that has a slight texture on it, I think they came out pretty smooth. Might be using the same paper in some card projects soon, it comes in over 30 colours and is really nice quality at 160gsm so plenty of scope for applications. Is anyone else a little turned on by that?

My geeky mate Sam Hassan put together this site on Wordpress. I have been customizing it and adding the content and having to learn sooooo much new computer stuff. But I’m gradually getting there I think. You use these plugin things to show pictures and for the shop feature, and you have to learn how to use all of them first, and then put loads of stuff in and then take loads of stuff out, and each thing has a CSS sheet where you can customize text and colours and stuff, and then some plugins don’t work with other plugins so all the work you’ve just done becomes redundant…

Anyway, it’s now at a state I’m happy with, it all seems to work and it’s nice and easy for me to update and make changes on as I go.

Cosmo Cards hit the shops

On 09.04.09 I went to the fine city of Norwich to help out and see the launch of Cherry Cherry, a new shop selling contemporary handmade crafts including cards, jewellery, stationary etc, as a concession within the cool home boutique shop The Perfect Pad.

They are the very first stockists of my cards, and I am a very happy to be involved with them. Cherry Cherry has been set up by Kate Seaward and Gemma Correll. I shared a house with Kate for 3 years whilst at university in Nottingham so we are good friends and she is a tallented illustrator in her own right, as is Gemma. The shop is a great accomplishment for the girls and I wish them, and me, the best of luck.

Supposedly I sold a few in the first couple of days so just hope it continues…

Weekend in the Westcountry

On 10.04.09 I travelled down to where I spent my teen years, Devon. I still have school friends down there and try to make it down at least a few times a year as it is one of my favourite places. I normally stay around a village called Morchard Bishop, it is pretty rural, just one pub and a post office in the village itself, but has beautiful views of the countryside all around. I have two friends that live either side of the village, one in a commune called Beech Hill (pic). I also saw a friend and his wife who have just had their second very cute baby, and their barn conversion which is looking amazing, especially considering the last time I saw it it was just a barn with some steel girders in and now has rooms and windows and the first fit is nearly finished. They hope to be in 3-4 months and I am well jealous…

It was a really refreshing break though, and I think well deserved. Now got a few more days to spend working on the website before going back to school on Monday…
