I recently exhibited a few pics of my laser cuts in an exhibition “Drawing with Fire” at Bristol UWE focusing on ‘Paper Models: investigating laser cutting technology to develop new artists’ books and paper-based creative practice for arts, crafts and design’. Not my stuff in the pic but you get the gist… Cutting edge stuff (muffled chortle).

We Meet the Makers…

I was fortunate enough to be asked to showcase my work at the “We Make London” Meet the Makers event a few weeks ago at Craft Central in Clerkenwell. It was a networking event to meet the other designers and organizing team behind the upcoming Christmas fair. It was really useful to meet other crafters and hear their stories and felt I came away having learnt something and it’s nice to know there are others in the same situation as me out there.

Now it’s full steam ahead for the fair itself, which is on Sat Dec 4th in the stunning venue of Chelsea Old Town Hall. Check out the facebook event here.

A mate gave me some of this new silicone putty material called Sugru. It’s brilliant, it’s made to alter existing objects to give better grip, shape, waterproofness etc. Take a look and get some yourself as it’s wicked.

I needed somwhere to store and organise my paper collection so I made this flat-pack tower unit from double ply cardboard. It’s all done old skool with a pencil, ruler and scalpel. No glue needed.

Going Potty…

In August, for the first time in ages, I treated myself to a holiday. After lots of research I chose to do a pottery course, and it was awesome. We spent a week learning different techniques, mainly focusing on throwing on the wheel. After 4 months I finally got hold of my finished pots, fired and glazed by the teacher, a very experienced potter. Here are a few pics and if you’re interested in taking a course check out Deborah Baynes Pottery School as it was great. Good setting, good food, good people and great fun.

Cosmo Cards go to market

So, it has been ages, but I’ve been moving house, and got some new responsibilities at school, so it has been pretty hectic the past few months. About 6-7 months ago I applied for the “We Make London” Christmas fair, and as my only market this year it was a big thing to work towards. It was the first showing of my new laser cut artworks, which went down a treat, and I actually made some money for once… I’m working on pics at the moment. It was a really fun day, and good to see and talk to other crafters trying to do similar things with their time. Anyway, it was good to start getting the name out there, and people liked both the cards and new work enough to part with their hard earned cash, which is a massive compliment.

2010 is going to be big for Cosmo Cards so keep checking back.

New Work

I’ve been working on some new designs to go alongside the cards, something a bit more arty, and today managed to use the laser cutter to do a first test cut. I wanted to see how far I could push it in terms of complexity and see which papers worked best with the cutter. I think it went pretty well and you can definitely see the potential for the project in the future.

My summer hols start in under a fortnight so will be producing a lot more real soon.

Wedding Invitations

Recently I’ve been pretty busy at my day job so ain’t been up to loads with the cards, but I’ve just confirmed that I’m cutting down to 3 days a week from Sept so I will have a lot more time in the very near future. I cannot wait.

I have just finshed an order for 50 wedding invites. These were new designs that pushed my little cutting machine quite hard. But I was pleased with the result. They’re made from 2 sheets of this Murano paper, it’s really nice, deckled on one side, comes in lots of nice colours. The sheets are hand sown together. They’re about as quality as I think I can make.

Sorry about the rubbish pic, I’ll sort some better ones soon. Working on designs for matching menu and place names.
